A Fist Full of Scales

After browsing etsy and getting back into monster hunter via monster hunter generations ultimate, I was inspired to have a go at making some scales from clay. This turned out to be a bit more tricky than I had imagined, because although the monster hunter franchise revolves around obtaining scales, plates, shells and hides from various creatures, these materials are seldom seen in isolation. Complicating the matter, inspection of the PSP in game models reveals muddy textures that suggest the idea of scales but in reality is just a lattice of squares.

Rather than get bogged down with fancy things like research and reference materials, I opted to just have a go, after all, everyone knows what a scale looks like right?

um, maybe not.

After several attempts I had no choice but to accept that I do not in fact know what scales look like. As a result, I purchased a set of fish scale cookie cutters from amazon.
